Going abroad for higher studies is an ambition that many Indians have. From a young age they are told of the many benefits it offers. A degree from a prestigious university in the west means a high-paid job in a well-known firm.

St.John’s College, a part of the University of Cambridge in England instituted this scholarship in honour of the former prime minister of India. By way of this scholarship one can be funded for doctoral degrees in domains such as Science & Technology, Economics and Social Sciences. In addition to this those students intent on studying Aerospace Engineering and Energy Studies will have some preference. 

A huge plus is the scholarships are fully funded and further benefit students by paying their academic fees and international airfare. Also, they offer a monthly stipend to cover living expenses and UK visa. 

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan – 2014

This is a government initiative brought into being for students of Commonwealth countries. According to this some people are given a grant to study in the UK. A stipulation here is that the awardees will go back to their respective countries and make a contribution there upon the completion of the programme. 

In accordance with the norms of the scholarship the student does not have to pay the international travel expenses, tuition fee, adequate maintenance and other allowances. 

If the students wants to apply for a Master’s degree he or she should hold a Bachelor’s degree in that subject. The cut off for Humanities and Social Science subjects is 60% and 65% for Medical, Engineering and Technology, Science and Agriculture.

Every year the CWIT offers as many as 10 awards. Winners of these awards will study a subject of their choice for 2–3 months up to a year in the UK. Accommodation, living costs and fees are covered here. 

Hornby Scholarships

Hornby Scholarships

This is a trust that awards scholarships to teachers who teach English and are from developing countries such as India. The prime focus of this trust is to aid English Language specialists such as senior teachers, teacher-trainers, inspectors and material writers by handing them MA scholarships which will help them study English. In addition to this they can teach in the UK for one year. Once this is over graduates are encouraged to use what they have learnt in their home countries. A stipulation is that the applicant must have no fewer than 5 years experience as an English Language teacher.
